What does a "World Phone," triple band EGSM 900/GSM 1800/1900, mean
in practise? The Nokia 6610 phone can operate in these three different GSM networks, which in practice means that it can be used on all five continents where these networks are supported - EGSM 900 and GSM 1800 are supported in certain countries within Europe, Africa, Asia and Brazil, and GSM 1900 is supported within certain countries in the North and South America.
What enhancements are compatible with the Nokia 6610 phone? The following enhancements are compatible with the Nokia 6610 phone: BLD-3 Li-ion 720 mAh battery, Boom Headset, LCH-9 Mobile Charger, ACP-12 Travel Charger, and Nokia Camera Headset HS-1C.
Are different keymats available? The 'silver' keymat is the only one available, there are no enhancement keymats available for this model.
The Boom Headset is designed in a very new way. Why is that? Nokia wants to serve its users in a best possible way by introducing innovative and comfortable new enhancements. This new boom headset is a good example of an easy-to-use and comfortable hands free device.
What are the functionalities of the new Loopset? The Loopset offers Mobile Freedom for hearing aid users. It is a convenient, easy-to-use portable loopset for users of T-coil equipped hearing aids. The Loopset features answering and ending calls, and it can also be connected to other audio devices and use the inductive loopset for listening to music from other devices. The loopset can also be connected to a cochlear implant.
What is the new Pop-PortTM interface connector? Nokia 6610 is one of the first Nokia phones with Pop-PortTM connector. The Nokia Pop-PortTM connector will be a primary interface connector in future Nokia phones. It has been designed for the mobile environment and supports advanced functionalities, such as digital enhancement identification, stereo audio or fast data connectivity. With the launch of the Pop-PortTM connector, Nokia will gradually open parts of the interface and license the specifications to both enhancement and phone manufacturers. This will significantly expand the choice of innovative and appealing enhancements from companies experienced in the music, entertainment and imaging arena, for example.
What data options does the Nokia 6610 have and what are the data speeds? The Nokia 6610 supports CSD (Circuit Switched Data), HSCSD (High Speed Circuit Switched Data) and GPRS (General Packet Radio Service). The Nokia 6610 supports GPRS multi-slot class 6, which enables 3+1 and 2+2 (receiving/sending) connection and is optimal for browsing and downloading.
What JavaTM version does the Nokia 6610 support? The Nokia 6610 phone supports the Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) platform, specifically designed for consumer electronics products. More specifically, the platform is based on industry standard Mobile Information Device Profile 1.0 (MIDP 1.0), which provides essential functionality to create applications for mobile phones.
What are the benefits of Java technology for phone users? Traditionally, handsets have come with a limited set of pre-installed applications, such as a calendar, a clock and a few games. Java technology is radically changing this. It will enable the phone users to download new applications into their phones. Thus, phone users will be able to benefit from the creative potential of thousands of application developers. Examples of pre-installed and downloadable Java applications include converter, portfolio manager, bilingual phrase books and map applications. Java technology makes the phone more useful than ever, and lets the phone user personalize her/his handset by selecting the applications she/he wants. The Nokia 6610 supports download of Java applications both over the WAP connection and by using PC suite.
How many applications can be downloaded into the Nokia 6610? The memory reserved for Java applications in the Nokia 6610 is dynamic. The maximum size of an application downloaded over-the-air via WAP is 64kB. The user can download up to 6 applications (max. 64kB each) to the phone. If the downloaded applications are smaller, there is space for more applications. It is possible to download up to 64kB from the Internet to a PC and then transfer it to the phone using the Nokia PC Suite.
Note: The capacity described here refers to the overall application memory. The Nokia 6610 is pre-loaded with some Java midlets that occupy a certain amount of memory. These can be erased and new midlets can be downloaded to replace them.
What Java™ applications does the Nokia 6610 have pre-installed? Pre-installed Java applications on the Nokia 6610 include a Converter (for currencies, temperature, weight and other measures), a Portfolio Manager (to track stocks and other securities) and two Java games: Puzzle Chess and Bounce.
Where can I download Java applications? Many parties will be offering Java applications. Operators will have a key role in ensuring that their subscribers will have easy access to downloadable applications. Club Nokia will offer downloadable Java applications starting from July 2002. Because the Nokia 6610 supports application downloading via PC suite, the phone users can also get midlets from the Internet and download them to their handset.
What is MMS? Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) is a messaging service for the mobile environment standardized by WAP forum and the 3rd Generation Partnership Program 3GPP. To the phone user MMS is very similar to Short Message Service (SMS). It provides automatic immediate delivery for user created content from phone to phone. The message addressing used is primarily phone numbers, thus the traffic goes from phone to phone. MMS also provides support for email addressing, so that messages can be sent to email. In addition to the content type familiar from SMS: text, MMS messages can contain still images, text, voice or audioclips, videoclips, and presentation information. An MMS message is a single entity with text, image, and sound content. The extent of content support varies from phone to phone. MMS transport is done using WAP protocols and any bearer capable of WAP can be used. Thus, MMS is bearer independent, e.g. MMS is not limited to only GSM or WCDMA.
Can I purchase a digital camera and use it with this phone, like with the Nokia 9210? Transferring digital images from a camera directly to a Nokia 6610 is not possible. Images from a digital camera can be transferred through PC to Club Nokia Photo Zone, and then sent as an MMS message and used as wallpaper. Digital images can only be directly transferred to a Nokia 6610 using the Nokia Camera Headset HS-1C. The Nokia Camera Headset is equipped with a Digital VGA camera, which allows you to take and transfer pictures to your Nokia 6610 via the Pop-Port™ connector, or to your PC by using the PC Suite via Data cable, Bluetooth or
Infrared.
What are the changeable color schemes? There are different color scheme options to choose from to personalize some of the user interface elements such as battery and network bars and other basic indicators.
Can I get colorful operator logos? Yes, there are new operator logos, which are bigger (100x50) and support colors as well. The downloading mechanism is the same as usual. The color operator logos have their own MIME type.
Are "traditional" picture messages supported as well? Traditional picture messages are supported in black and white, pictures in size 72x28 pixels. The preloaded pictures are optimized for the larger color screen, but the size is the same as in traditional, which means that all traditional small detailed graphic pictures do not look optimal in the Nokia 6610.
Can the Nokia 6610 play/record/send video clips? No it cannot. The Nokia 6610 supports still images, and animated GIF graphics are supported in MMS, Gallery viewing and in WAP animations, but not as wallpaper.
Are there any differences in the radio functionality between the Nokia 6610 and the Nokia 6510? The radio in the Nokia 6610 is a stereo radio, whereas the Nokia 6510 radio is mono. The radio in the Nokia 6610 works very similarly to a normal radio. You can manually browse between channels or use the search, and program your favourite channels under the number keys (like quick dial saving from the phonebook).
Why is the developer community (Forum Nokia) important? The wireless world is full of applications yet to be discovered. Through the support of open platforms and interfaces, such as WAP, EPOC and Java, we invite anybody interested in designing applications for Nokia's mobile devices to take part in the development work. Forum Nokia is a virtual workshop for the world's application and service developers, where they can get tools, advice and support for their independent development work. For more information, visit:
