In a press release issued today, Nokia announced an updated version of their Communicator series. The 9500 Communicator is to be the first in a series of enterprise-class devices from Nokia. No word on what surprises future devices may hold, but we may hear more during CeBIT in March. The new Series 80 Symbian powered device is targeted at business users, offering a full suite of office applications for creating and editing documents, email, personal information management, PC synchronization, and web browsing. The 9500 also includes enhanced wireless communications with integrated 802.11b (wi-fi) and Bluetooth. This type of connectivity all in one package, without the need for add-on cards, will make the 9500 a very handy tool for the Mobile Office set.
The 9500 features dual 65K color screens – 640 x 200 pixels on the inside, 128 x 128 pixels on the outside. Surprisingly, the external screen uses the Nokia Series 40 UI, so that you can use the 9500 like a basic phone and switch to full organiser functionality later. Security is an important concern for many corporate users. To cater to this class of user, the 9500 features support for Virtual Private Networks (VPN), which allow you to access your corporate network securely. Additionally, Symantec plans to provide unique firewall and antivirus protection with advanced over-the-air update features. The 9500 is expected to start shipping in Q4 2004 with an unsubsidized price of €800 in Europe.
